Frequently Asked Questions

How can I reach my solar dream?

You have a vision. We have the expertise. Our Silicon Solar team wants to work side-by-side with you to see your solar dream become reality, from start to finish. Contact us today to meet our team and start the design, engineering, and testing process. We can’t wait to work with you!

How does a solar pump work?

There are two different kinds of solar pumps you can buy depending on your specific needs. An aerator pump moves air throughout your pond, and the water pump creates water flow in your pond by moving the water itself. No matter which pump you purchase, the solar panels work the same. The attached solar panels either charge a battery (which then runs the pump) or power the pump directly.

Solar pond pumps with batteries can operate at night or on cloudy days because of the stored power in the battery, but a pump without battery can only operate when the solar panel is in direct sunlight.

I live in a place with long winters and many days of precipitation. Is solar right for me?

Solar panels will not produce as much energy on a cloudy day as they will on a sunny day; however, our photovoltaic (PV) solar systems are incredibly resistant to extreme weather and efficient enough to produce energy even on cloudy or rainy days. Your solar panels will still work even if the sunlight is reflected or partially hidden by clouds. Additionally, rain actually helps to keep your panels operating efficiently by washing away dust and dirt.

It’s important to remember that solar panels do not generate electricity at night. You still need the sun, even if it’s hidden behind clouds!

What are the environmental benefits of solar power?

Using a photovoltaic (PV) system to generate electricity is an eco-friendly way to reduce your carbon footprint. Studies show that one megawatt-hour of solar-generated electricity avoids more than 1,300 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions. Fewer CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions means a healthier planet!

In addition to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, solar energy is a renewable resource. This means that solar energy from the sun can be used again and again without limit. Fossil fuels, on the other hand, are limited resources that can be used only once. As fossil fuels like gasoline and coal become short in supply and harder to find, energy costs ($/kwh) from traditional energy systems will rise. Switching to solar today will protect you from the rising energy costs of using nonrenewable energy.

What happens to my solar system if I move?

Studies show that solar systems add value to your property and help it sell quicker! Usually, the increase in property value exceeds the initial cost of the solar system, so you will be able to recover the cost of the system without needing to move the entire system itself.

What is the lifespan of my solar system?

Our PV solar systems can last up to 25 years, which is more than enough time for you to see a big return on investment and much lower energy bills!

What kind of financial incentives are there for solar energy?

There are many state and federal solar incentives in the United States that you can benefit from immediately after installing solar panels on your commercial or residential building. Some include…

  • The Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC)
  • Net Energy Metering (NEM)
  • Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs)
  • Solar Tax Exemptions
  • Cash Rebates

Some benefits vary, so take a look into your state’s solar incentive policies to see how much you can save. An up-to-date database of available incentives and pro-solar policies can be found at www.dsireusa.org.
