Light Intensity Vs. Temperature of the Tube – Solar Energy Lab

Silicon Solar’s Solar Energy Labs are a great resource for teachers to utilize while teaching their students about solar energy.  With labs that focus on both solar thermal and solar electric power, you will be able to give your students a great hands on experience with solar energy.

Light Intensity Vs. Temperature of the Tube Lab

PROBLEM: Can you determine if the heating rate of an evacuated tube collector vary in the same manner as the light intensity affecting it?
MATERIALS: evacuated tube, water, computer, logger pro software, vernier thermocouple, cork stopper, radiation lamp with 150W bulb, meter stick, ring stands and clamps, small piece of styrofoam. (Materials Not Included, we recommend using our Demo Collector listed below)
INTRODUCTION: This lab serves a double purpose in examining the inverse square law for light intensity and comparing the heating rates of an evacuated tube solar collector used in solar heating devices. This tube is constructed with two layers of borosilicate glass and an insulating vacuum layer in between. We will be looking to discover if our light intensity sensor produces an inverse square relationship with distance, and to see if there is an inverse square relationship between light intensity and heating rate.
