Check out our great FAQs and Answers for our Solar Panels & Cells below:
1) How do solar photovoltaic cells work?
Photovoltaic (PV) cells transform the energy from sunlight into electricity. PV cells are made from a semiconductor material, typically silicon. Elements are added to the silicon which creates conductivity within the cell and activates the movement of electrons. This flow of electrons is an electric current that can be used to power almost anything!
2) What are the different types of solar cells?
The three major types of PV solar cells are monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, and amorphous silicon cells.

The three types of solar cells reflect the materials used to make such cells: monocrystalline silicon, polycrystalline silicon, amorphous silicon.
Monocrystalline cells are the most efficient form of solar cells. They are unique in that they use a single, very pure crystal of silicon in each cell. Silicon Solar carries several sizes of monocrystalline solar cells with various output capacities. Monocrystalline cells are ideal for any uses that require high efficiency output with limited space.
Polycrystalline cells are generally slightly less efficient than monocrystalline cells, and correspondingly, are slightly less expensive. Unlike the monocrystalline cells, polycrystalline cells are composed of many different crystals, and appear to have a metal flake effect resulting in a surface that looks somewhat like a mosaic. This type of panel is currently the most popular type of solar cell used in large photovoltaic panels and arrays.
Amorphous cells are much lower in price than their crystalline counterparts, though they also have a lower module efficiency. These types of solar cells are made from a non-crystalline form of silicon, and thus contain much less of the material which allow them to be significantly thinner than crystalline cells. While some crystalline cells are rigid and can be quite fragile, amorphous cells, also known as “thin-film” cells, and quite durable and can even be flexible. They also perform very well in indirect light and in high heat compared to other types of cells. Amorphous cells are extremely versatile and can therefore be used in a wide range of applications, but you are probably most familiar with their use in small electronics such as calculators.
