How To Light a Flag:
- Measure the flagpole. Select a solar light that will have a strong light source at night. Silicon Solar’s GenLight 108 LED light will work the best for lighting larger flags atop a 15- to 30-foot flagpole.
- If the light is placed on the ground, use half the length of the flagpole to find the ideal location for the solar light. For instance, if your pole is 20 feet high, measure out 10 feet from the pole.
- Place the solar light in the ground aiming upward toward the flag. The light should illuminate the pole just below the flag to achieve the proper lighting effect.
- Wait for dark and make adjustments, if necessary. You may need to adjust the light up or down a bit, but the light’s distance from the pole should remain the same in order to illuminate the flag regardless of the wind direction.

Proper Flag Etiquette:
Title 4 of the United States Code sets forth the instructions and rules regarding the display of the American flag by civilians. In pertinent part, Section 6 of the Flag Code states:
“It is the universal custom to display the flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationary flagstaffs in the open. However, when a patriotic effect is desired, the flag may be displayed 24 hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness.”
