How To Test Your Solar System For Leaks:
After you install your Solar Hot Water System, you should test for leaks before it is charged with the heat transfer fluid.  This process should be done with air pressure.  Unlike liquid leak testing where the liquid can evaporate, air pressure can detect even the smallest leaks.  It is very important to check for leaks because the loss of fluid over time would negatively affect system operating conditions and overall performance.  For more information about testing for leaks, check out our webinar on air pressure testing.

How To Connect An Air Compressor To The Pump Station For Pressure Testing:
The pump station’s fill valve has GHT hose threads on the outside.  You will need to make an adapter using the following three fittings to attached your air compressor to the fill valve:

  • Schrader valve x1/4″ male NPT
  • Reducing Bushing 1/2″ NPT male x1/4″ NPT female
  • Hose fitting 1/2″ NPT male x3/4″ swivel GHT female

Steps for making the adapter:
1. Put Teflon tape on the NPT threads of the Schrader valve and bushing.
2. Use two tools to attach the adapter to the pump station: one to hold the fill valve in place and one to tighten the adapter.
