Do I have to use my battery with the AquaJet Pro 24V Kit?

No you do not.  If you do not want to use the battery, then you can just connect the panel and pump into each other.  People choose to do this because of appearance or because they do not care if the pump does not run longer or more often when not using the battery.

Do I have to use my battery with the AquaJet Pro 9V Kit?

No you do not.  If you do not want to use the battery, then you can just connect the panel and pump into each other.  People choose to do this because of appearance or because they do not care if the pump does not run longer or more often when not using the battery.

Can I buy just the AquaJet 9V panel and pump without the battery?

No you can not.  If you want the AquaJet 9v panel and pump than you must buy the whole kit.

Can I buy just the AquaJet 24V panel and pump without the battery?

No you can not.  If you want the AquaJet 12V panel and pump than you must buy the whole kit.

How should I clean my fountain/waterfall pump?

Regular maintenance should be performed to help prolong the life of the pump. Over time, debris may become lodged within the motor and impede movement or reduce the effectiveness. To help loosen up or get rid of debris it is recommended to remove the pump from the fountain or pond, remove the plastic cover on the body of the motor, soak the pump in a bucket of soapy water overnight and then let it thoroughly dry.

Why does my pump not work out of water?

Because some water pumps are specifically designed to only work underwater, they are often built with “dry run protection” to protect the pump. Out of water a variety of things can go wrong. The water is often used as a type of lubrication within the pump, without which the pump bearings or gears can be worn away more easily. Another common problem is that because these pumps are built to run underwater, running them out of water will allow the pump to run faster than normal because it will be pushing air instead of water. The speeding up will cause the motor to draw more power which can often damage circuitry or burn something inside the pump from the increased power draw and heat. To prevent this many pumps have circuits inside designed to limit the maximum amount of power that is drawn to match the maximum amount of power needed while running underwater (through testing). This ensures that when the pump is removed from water, it will be able to tell very quickly and shut itself off before it becomes damaged.

 

I am making my own fountain. What size pump do I need?

The most important rating for a fountain pump is the head rating, or the maximum height that the pump can lift water upwards. This is important for determining whether or not a pump has enough power to physically lift water up a desired height. Normally the pump should be slightly oversized (for example, a 3.5 foot rated pump for a 3 foot fountain) rather than undersized because a nozzle can be put on the pump to reduce flow if desired, but an undersized pump won’t be able to push any water to the top of the fountain and thus will create no flow at all.

The second rating to note is the Gallons-per-hour (GPH) which determines the amount of flow. This is important for determining how much water will be flowing down the fountain, and is most times subjective to each individual customer’s needs and wants. A higher GPH rating means more water will be flowing and is usually greater for fountains with wide mouths where a large stream of water will be flowing down. It is important not to buy a pump with a GPH rating that is too high as too much water flowing can result in water splashing out of the fountain.

 

What is the head rating of a fountain pump?

The head rating of a pump is another way of describing the maximum lift height of the pump. It is the height that the pump is able to push water upward. This is especially important for fountain pumps where a submersible pump is usually located at the base of the fountain and must push water to the top of the fountain.

 

Can I replace my AC fountain pump with a solar DC fountain pump?

Sometimes customers have fountains with AC pumps already installed but wish to have their fountains converted to DC to make them energy independent. Converting an AC pump to DC is a very difficult process that is outside the scope of most DIY projects. In almost all cases an existing AC pump can be removed and simply replaced with a DC pump that will run straight off of solar power. In most cases the tubing can be connected directly to the new pump but in some cases tubing may need to be replaced as well. How Do Solar Pond Pumps Work?

Solar Pond Pumps are extremely simple.  First, there are different types of solar pond pumps to worry about.  One, an aerator pump, which pumps air into the pump. The other is a water pump, which moves water around the pond. Whether your solar pond pump is an air or water pump, it works the same way. The solar panel either chargers a battery (which then runs the pump) or powers the pump directly. The pump then does its job, either aerating or moving the water in your pond. Solar pond pumps with batteries can operate at night or on cloudy days because of the stored power in the battery, but a pump without battery can only operate when the solar panel is in direct sunlight.

How Do Solar Fountain Pumps Work?

Solar Fountain Pumps work very simply.  There are two main types of solar fountain pumps to look at:

Solar Fountain Pumps with Batteries:

In this type of solar fountain pump, the solar panel charges a battery (6v or 12v) which is used to power the pump.  This allows these solar pumps to operate during the night or on cloudy days.

Solar Fountain Pumps without Batteries:

In this type of solar fountain pump, the solar panel directly powers the pump.  This means that the pump can only move water during the daytime on sunny days.  Cloudy weather and nighttime will stop performance.
