How to determine the size of solar panel or flexible solar panel I need to get for a desired voltage?

The voltage will vary with the size of the solar panel. Remember Watts (W) = Volts (V) * Amps (A)

Where are our flexible solar panels manufactured?

Our flexible solar panels are manufactured domestically.  This means that they are made in the U.S.   The thin-film solar panels are also manufactured domestically.

Do we sell a flexible solar panel that will power a laptop computer?

Yes we do.  The SolMaxx FlexFold 20W Flexible PV Panel or the SolMaxx FlexFold 62W Flexible PV Panel are two of our products that will power a laptop computer.  The SolMaxx FlexFold 62W Flexible PV Panel will charge a computer more efficiently than the SolMaxx FlexFold 20W Flexible PV Panel.  The SolMaxx FlexFold 20W Flexible PV Panel will charge your laptop computer, but it will work more as a trickle charger, meaning it will take many more hours to charge your laptop especially depending on the weather conditions.

What is the efficiency of PowerFilm modules?

There are many factors that go into the how much power you are able to draw from your solar panels, and many are related to the design and orientation of your solar array. With that in mind, a safe average to assume with PowerFilm technology is 5%. Flexible panel technology, however, is still young compared to rigid panels, and as such is advancing all the time. There are widely varying standards within the industry for solar panel efficiency ratings and we encourage you to test different panels to find their actual power output.

What is the ideal operation temperature for the PowerFilm series?

The PowerFilm series is designed to operate in all atmospheric conditions, though the optimal operation temperature is around 75°F. Every panel gets less efficient as its temperature rises far above 80°F

Do PowerFilm solar panels need maintenance?

Solar Panels are very low maintenance in general. As long as you perform routine checks of the wiring to insure that it maintains its integrity, and wipe off the panel with a damp cloth to remove any dirt and grime that has built up on it, your panels should last a very long time.

1) Can I connect these 6-7 V flexible cells together?

Yes, you can connect our flexible panels together to increase both the voltage and the current. Please see the “How-To” and “Learning Center” tabs for more information connecting thin film solar panels.

2) Do the thin film flexible cells include connection tabbing?

Some of the flexible cells are sold with connection tabbing already in place, while some products are not. Typically, Silicon Solar’s thin film solar cells that include encapsulated weatherproof lamination come with tabs, while the “non-weatherized” options do not include tabbing. The recommended connector wire size is a minimum size of 24 gauge. Please see the individual product specifications or feel free to call our customer service representatives at (800) 786-0329 if you have any questions.

3) If I need to charge a battery, what size thin film solar cells should I use?

First, you must take note of the voltage of the battery you wish to charge. As a general rule of thumb, for 1.2 volt batteries (such as AA batteries) a solar module with an Operating Voltage of 3-4 volts.  A 3-3.6 volt module will typically charge 2 AA rechargeable batteries. For 6 volt batteries, we recommend a solar module with an Operating Voltage of at least 7.2 volts.  Modules of this voltage will charge 5 AA rechargeable 1.2 volt batteries or a 6 volt gel or lead acid battery. A solar module with an Operating Voltage of 15.4 volts will charge a 12 volt gel or lead acid battery.  The amperage rating of each solar module will determine how quickly the module will charge each battery unit.  If you have additional questions, please call our customer service specialists at (800) 786-0329.

How To Connect Flexible Panels in Series or Parallel

Connecting solar modules in series will achieve higher voltage, while connecting them in parallel will increase the current. However, only connect like modules together.  For example, you may connect two 3.6 V 100mA modules, or two 4.8 V 50 mA modules, but do not mix them.  Parallel connecting two similar modules will double the output current, and series connecting three identical modules will triple the output voltage.

Note the polarity of the solar module in the “Learning. The positive copper contact is on one end and the negative is on the other end.   The solar modules should be soldered to from the front.  Use the hot tip of the soldering iron to melt through the clear coating over the copper tape. Do not burn through more than just the thin clean coating on the panel as burning too deeply will damage the solar cell. You can also remove a small piece of the clear coating with a sharp knife prior to soldering to the copper tape. To establish good contact between tabs and cells, melt a dot of solder on to the exposed copper tape using a low temperature soldering iron adjusted to about 600 to 650 degrees (F). You may also also solder the tabs directly to the copper tape, without using a solder dot.

These panels do not come with Blocking Diodes. If you are using this panel to charge batteries you will need to attach a blocking (reverse) diode or disconnect the panel when sunlight is not hitting the panel. This will prevent the solar module from draining the battery when the solar module is in the dark. A diode is not required for a battery-free electrical device.
