Monocrystalline is also commonly known as crystalline silicon and is by face the most widely used solar photovoltaic technology.  If you see a solar panel, chances are it is made of monocrystalline.  Monocrystalline solar panels are the most dependable and efficient way to produce electricity from the sum.  They were first developed in 1955 and have been the go-to choice for many years.  Solar panels are made up of silicon semiconductors.  When light hits the panel, energy is absorbed and knocks the electrons loose.  This causes the electrons to flow freely.  Monocrystalline silicon solar cells are designed to direct the free electrons in a path to power various appliances.  The voltage and current of the cell determines the power of the cell.

In monocrystalline solar panels each module is made from a single silicon crystal.  This makes them more efficient, though more expensive than the newer and cheaper thin-film and polycrystalline solar panel.  It is easy to recognize which panel is a monocrystalline solar panel because they are typically black or iridescent blue in color.

There many benefits to monocrystalline solar panels.  One is longevity; monocrystalline panels have been around a long time and provide evidence to their durability and longevity.  Many of the earliest modules from the 1970’s are still producing electricity today.   Some have even withstood the harsh conditions of space travel.  Efficiency is another benefit.  Monocrystalline panels convert the highest amount of solar energy into electricity. So if you want to produce the most electricity from one specific area or you have limited space, this is the solar panel that is the most efficient.

Monocrystalline panels normally have a lower installation cost.  Thin-film panels take longer to install and need more mounting rails, which makes the installations cost greater than with monocrystalline panels.  Monocrystalline panels are not hazardous to the environment, even when the product reaches the end of its usage.  Another benefit is more electricity.  Monocrystalline panels produce more electricity per sqm, therefore reducing your electrical bill and adding to the sale of your electric.  If you want to “go green”, monocrystalline panels reduce the amount of electricity needed from your local power plants, which reduces our dependence on fossil fuels.
