El Sid Solar Circulating Pump:
SID stands for static-impeller driven, meaning these pumps contain an electronic driver or motor which has no moving parts but simply spins on a magnetic field. The magnetic field grasps the impeller and visibly spins it without any moving parts or seals. As a result, these pumps are extremely long-lived without much power consumption. These pumps are completely brass and stainless steel, so they do not corrode.

The El SID pumps have no seals which can leak, and no bearings to get hot or brushes to spark, so they are explosion proof.

Q: What is the difference between the B [battery] and PV [photovoltaic] versions?

A: There are specific models which can be operated directly off a PV panel or a battery, and other models can operate off an independent AC power supply. If you plan to use an AC power supply, we recommend the following:

• 14-17 volts; use a PV model
• 12 to 14 volts; you can use a B model

Q: What is the pump's power usage?

A: The voltage of the pump is 3.5 or 5 or 20 watts at 12 V, and 10 watts at 12 or 24 V.

Q: What is the SID pump's best use?

A: These pumps are circulating and they are best for circulating water in a closed-loop system, such as heating or solar. As for anything else, their use is only as unlimited as your imagination. Keep in mind they'll pump water, as well as antifreeze and various other chemicals.

Here are just a couple of ideas:

• You can power them with a small RV deep-cycle 12-volt battery. Keep a trickle charger on the battery so that if the power goes out your pump will keep on running.

• For solar system loops, the SID can be powered directly from a PV panel. In the sunshine, heat builds in the solar hot water panel and at the same time electricity is made in the PV panel. The pump slowly starts with the smallest amount of current and pushes the heated water to the storage tank. This eliminates the need for controllers, thermostats and sensors.

Q: What is the most common size?

A: The SID10 is the most common size because it has been around the longest. It is a good average size for radiant floor heat and domestic hot water solar.

Q: What would the 3.5 and 5.0 watt models be used for?

A: The 3.5 and 5.0 watt models are great for smaller systems and any application which requires less lift.

Q: Why are SID pumps more expensive?

A: These SID pumps are in fact fairly inexpensive compared with other cheaper but shorter-lived pumps. Also, they have no brushes to change and no moving or rubbing parts.
