How do solar panels work?

How do solar panels work?

Solar panels collect the sun's energy in the form of photons and converts them to DC voltage, which becomes usable electricity. The DC voltage is converted to AC power through the work of an inverter, which is usually mounted next to your electric panel. Through a breaker in your electric panel, this AC power is connected to the electrical loads your home receives and uses.

What is the difference between a PWM and MPPT charge controller?

Pulse-Width Modulating (PWM) charge controllers use complex algorithms to determine the amount of charge going to a battery and slowly taper off charging as the battery becomes full. One of the greatest advantages of PWM controllers is that they have been around for many years, are cheaper, and are available in a wider variety of sizes for different applications.

You will need a 14 gauge wire with positive and negative terminals inside, and a basic knowledge of soldering. Wire can easily be spliced anywhere in between the connection from the solar panel to the battery box. Wire should not exceed 50 ft. in length at 14 gauge to minimize the voltage drop to below 3%. If you require the panel to be even farther away than this, the wire gauge should be thicker to compensate for the distance and still minimize voltage drop.Read More
